“Twenty miles onward is easier than to go one mile back for the lost evidence. Take care, then, when you find your Master, to cling close to Him.” If you’re a reader, you might recognize that quote from one of the great Christian-life allegorical works of all time, Pilgrim’s Progress by John Bunyan.
Bunyan points out, after the traveler lost his way and walked backward to regain his bearings, that it’s a much smoother journey to stay close to Jesus, than to wander away. Notice that it is the traveler who has wandered from the Master, not the Master from the traveler. It is we who decide to leave our Lord behind as we press on in our own power. Solomon, in the Books of Wisdom, tells us repeatedly that it is a difficult road back to God, filled with bumps and difficult conditions. It is a much easier path to continue walking closely with our Savior and follow His navigation.
I wonder, today, why have you wandered? And, where did you last leave Jesus? Did you decide that something felt better? Or, you thought you deserved some earthly happiness? Perhaps jealousy, or pride, pulled you from God’s guidance? The most beautiful part about God’s grace is that He is right where you left Him on the road. He patiently waits for you to return into His loving arms. The way back might be difficult as evil does everything in its power to confuse you and keep you lost. Furthermore, each time you leave the road back is more difficult. Yet, the Savior patiently waits for you. Seek and you will find Him.
It is far better and a road much easier traveled, to walk step for step in His guidance; to trust His roadmap for your life. You cannot follow Him if you do not know Him. You cannot know Him without digesting His revelation through His Word, the Bible. Align your path with God’s plan for your life through the beautiful gift of prayer. Trust the Holy Spirit to lead you and when you look back you will see the much easier road that you have walked with the Savior.
