The resurrection of Jesus Christ from his death on the cross is as essential to Christianity as an engine is to a car. Without it, the whole endeavor is pointless.
The resurrection finishes the work that Jesus did on the cross. Without it, Jesus just died…like any other man, and he is proved to be a liar or a lunatic (as CS Lewis once said). However, the truth of the resurrection makes Jesus Christ Lord of all, Conqueror of sin, and our Savior and Deliverer.
Throughout the centuries many have tried to explain away the resurrection…because to admit it means they are faced with a God decision. They say the apostles stole the body, he wasn’t really dead, and a whole bunch of other false theories. Well, let’s just consider the apostles for a minute…they were Jesus’ closest observers, they went everywhere with him, they saw what he did, they knew who he was when no one was around. They would’ve known, after over 3 years with him, if he was the real deal. Yet, they continued after his ascension, to take the gospel all over the world. They suffered greatly for the gospel message, they died violently as martyrs (save John who was tortured and exiled). Why? Why would they ever live in poverty, roam the world, risk everything, get tortured, and die horribly painful deaths… for a lie, or for some guy who tricked them?
Furthermore, how can we explain the rapid spread of Christianity, the thousands of ways God has orchestrated the spread of the gospel, the miracle of the Bible, and so much more.
See, mankind is faced with a decision…a decision to either accept what Jesus did for us on the cross through the resurrection…or a decision to ignore it and put blinders on. Many will go through life, even ignoring the reality of this very decision…nevertheless, it continues to haunt our deepest thoughts and we, as a society, continue to cover our eyes and ears in so many ways so that we can push the decision away and pretend that it’s not in front of us.
